Vivendi is making some major moves lately. Vivendi recently bought 6.6 percent stake in Ubisoft. Vivendi has a history “aggressively pursuing companies within the entertainment sector.” Why? Because Vivendi is a huge mongol as a Mass Media Property. Vivendi even owned Blizzard/Activision till around 2013 when Activision bought themselves out in part of a buyback process.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said Vivendi’s investment into Ubisoft was “unsolicited and unwelcome.”
“Our intention is and has always been to remain independent, a value which, for 30 years, has allowed us to innovate, take risks, create beloved franchises for players around the world, and which has helped the company grow into the leader it is today.”
Vivendi is pretty much doing a hostile takeover of places like Gameloft and now Ubisoft. While Ubisoft isn’t the most well liked company, it is a universally bad thing if a corporate entity like Vivendi is able to continue this trend. Vivendi is dangerous to Ubisoft and game companies in general of not only losing identity but losing actual little remaining quality left in the Triple A field.
