League of Legends Tribunal System is a Good Thing

Jeffrey Lin Riot lead game designer of social systems, had a few things to say when it came to the elimination of “toxic” behavior in League of Legends.

“Our team found that if you classified online citizens from negative to positive, the vast majority of negative behavior (which ranges from trash talk to non-extreme but still generally offensive language) did not originate from the persistently negative online citizens; in fact, 87 percent of online toxicity came from the neutral and positive citizens just having a bad day here or there,”

Lin also went on about the Tribunal System that seems to be working so far

“These cases were public, so players could see and discuss the behaviors, and the results were inspiring,” Lin said. “The vast majority of online citizens were against hate speech of all kinds; in fact, in North America, homophobic slurs were the most rejected phrases in the English language. It turns out that people just need a voice, a way to enact change.”

Lin also gives some numbers when talking about how much positive traction was gained from the tribunal system and allowing players to discuss things openly.

“As a result of these governance systems changing online cultural norms, incidences of homophobia, sexism and racism in League of Legends have fallen to a combined 2 percent of all games,” Lin said. “Verbal abuse has dropped by more than 40 percent, and 91.6 percent of negative players change their act and never commit another offense after just one reported penalty. These results have inspired us, because we realize that this isn’t an impossible problem after all.”

Lin also talks about responsibility being on the shoulders of all of us to make gaming a better place.

“Is it our responsibility to make online society a better place? Of course it is, for all of us. It is our society. As we collaborate with those outside of games, we are realizing that the concepts we’re using in games can apply in any online context. We are at a pivotal point in the timeline of online platforms and societies, and it is time to make a difference.”

Right now this system seems to be working in the short term and hopefully in the long run it will remain successful and give people a peaceful place to play League of Legends.

Stone Cold Steve Austin Takes WWE2K16 Cover Thoughts

Stone Cold Steve Austin has arrived on the cover of the next WWE2K16 game. In a recent interview when asked about being on the cover Austin says

“Being asked got me thinking, and I guess I kind of started looking back at all the things I managed to accomplish in the business. But I think it was testament to a very deep locker room in one the best eras in the business. All these years later, it is very special and I’m very proud and I was very happy to get the phone call to be the cover star of such a highly regarded video games franchise.”

Austin also discussed his fellow cover mate from previous titles

“No disrespect to the previous and extremely deserving WWE 2K cover Superstars–Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and John Cena–but it’s about time the franchise raised some hell with yours truly on the cover. I look forward to injecting a dose of ‘Texas Rattlesnake’ into this year’s game and overall campaign.”

With 2K boasting 120 unique characters one can clearly tell this is the biggest roster undertaking we have seen.

WWE 2K16 launches on October 27 for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 We have no word on PC yet but, if WWE2K15 was on the PC why wouldn’t WWE2K16?

Why Do People Care How Much Pewdiepie Makes

SlayerXTR and Rumandapples bring the subject of Pewdiepie to the table. Most notably trying to figure out why people actually care how much he makes. It honestly doesn’t matter. Pewdiepie has been around since at least 2010. The guy is here to stay, he has (by luck or intention) capitalized on the younger demographic because the will always be there. When someone tires of him they leave and another comes around. Why are people so content to hate the guy for creating a source of income for himself and doing something he seems to still genuinely enjoy? People love to throw bones at the guy for only being about money. Yet nobody brings up the fact he donates a decent amount of money to charity. This is not a Pewdiepie support post by any means. However it would be inaccurate to not state his contribution to charity and the youtube gaming world that is now filled with many let’s players and others that pewdiepie (among other big name youtubers) kind of opened the door for. Just giving credit where credit is due.

Starbreeze Acquires Payday Film Rights & Payday Movie Discussion

Looks like Starbreeze now owns the Payday IP after the majority acquisition of the film company Payday Productions.  Starbreeze acquired Overkill in June 2012, and had discussions about turning it into a film or tv series. Starbreeze has paid around $330,000 (SEK 2.73 million) and now own the multimedia rights to the Payday IP. Starbreeze is going to be covering its project development budget up to $150,000.

CEO Bo Andersson Klint says

“At Starbreeze, we see an ever increasing potential in the cross-fertilization between the gaming industry and other entertainment industries,” said Micke Hjorth, chairman of Starbreeze, in a statement. “Our lack of control and ownership over the movie project and TV rights were not optimal to Starbreeze, and I am very happy that we now fully control one of our core IP’s, Payday. We will now be in a superb position to even further capitalize on our franchise.”
